Avoiding the "Kidult" Syndrome
When does a young person become an adult? This is an issue our culture is having difficulty addressing. The age in which a young person is expected to be independent and take on adult responsibility has been slowly increasing. Now parents are talking about how their 20 something children are still hanging around home. This situation was just addressed in a humorous fashion in the movie Failure to Launch.
Unfortunately, the Christian community is not immune from dealing with the "kidult" culture. This ought not to be. The Biblical model is clear. The Old Testament teaches that Jewish young men enter into the adult world at age 13. It is clear that God saw fit to use young men and women for some of his greatest works. Consider David taking on Goliath, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego serving in the court of Nebuchadnezzar, Esther becoming queen to save her nation, and Mary becoming the mother of Jesus...more

Where is You Homeschool Ship Anchored?
How do you answer the question: "Why did you start home educating?" Your answer reveals a lot about your personal philosophy of education. Most people I talk to start home educating for one of several reasons. They want a better education for their children, or they are escaping a bad educational situation, or maybe they want to provide their children with a Christian education. Those who start because they want a better education for their children will often leave home education for similar reasons. When another education option comes along that is more convenient or seems to provide a better education, they move in that direction. Those who homeschool to escape a bad educational situation will often switch when they find what looks to be an easier alternative that allows them to resume their previous lifestyle without having to worry about their children's education. Those who start because they want a Christian education for their children will often look to private
schools if their financial situation improves or they hit a difficult place in their home education journey. Many fail to gain the greatest benefits of home education because they begin with incorrect motives and quit prematurely....more

Tennessee SCORE Report - More of the Same?
This article is a response to the recent release of the State Collaboraive on Reforming Education (SCORE) final report (www.tennesseescore.org). SCORE is headed by former U.S. Senator Bill Frist and other state education leaders. The state goal is to make Tennessee's education system the best in the Southeast with five years.
It is generally recognized that home educated students compare favorably to both public and privately schooled students when evaluated on the basis of academic achievement. As home educators, we are naturally concerned about educational reform and efforts to achieve educational success. We are also skeptical of any state efforts to improve education because they inevitably involve secularized educational goals and employment of the coercive power of the state in order to achieve them. Government education is one of the biggest businesses in our state with lots of money and power at stake. Allowing state authority over the education of our children opens the door to our family, and can lead to immense abuse of state power and the abridgement of individual and family freedom. An educational emergency can be used to justify increased educational budgets, higher taxes, and increased government power over individuals and families.
Before we are tempted to embrace the conclusions and goals of the SCORE report, it is important to examine some of the key premises inherent in this report. The SCORE effort seeks to improve education based on a secular, state definition of success that is intended to reinforce and increase state authority over parents and responsibilty for children...more
