Foundation for Educational Leadership
God's blessing on the homeschool community is causing rapid growth that puts tremendous strain on the volunteer leaders who provide support for thousands of area families and the activities that help make home education possible. In the mid 1990's, it became apparent that full-time leadership was necessary to provide for present and future growth in the movement. Cory Bennett was challenged to leave his ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ and direct a new ministry that would provide this leadership.
Foundation for Educational Leadership (FEL) was founded in 1997 as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) ministry. It is the result of efforts of Cory Bennett, president and founder, the Board of Directors of the Smoky Mountain Home Education Association and other area home education leaders. The purpose of this ministry, as stated in our charter, is:
1. To make disciples of Jesus Christ through the testifying, sharing, and teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2. To work as part of the Church, the body of Jesus Christ universal, with other members of the body of Christ to reach out to bring families to faith in Christ and to help establish them in the faith through Christian Education.
We believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ should be at the center of all educational endeavors. Christian education is simply Christian discipleship, and the mission of Foundation for Educational Leadership is to equip families, churches, Christian schools and other members of the body of Christ in the areas of education and discipleship.
FEL relies primarily on the tax-deductible contributions of families, churches, and businesses in order to fund the ministry. As full-time president of FEL, Cory is able to focus all of his efforts on the needs of home educating families, to provide constant leadership for the Smoky Mountain Home Education Association, to work with state home education leadership, and to assist churches and educational agencies in the area of family-directed private Christian Education. His salary is paid by FEL as the Lord provides for the ministry through donations. Click here to learn more about contributing to FEL.
